A new edition of Ferdinando Scianna’s autobiography, brought up to date with an account of the last ten years of his life and work. He has always been a man who writes as well as makes pictures, the prolific author of many volumes who with his recent titles has chosen to bring verbal and visual expression into a single syntax, and that is exactly what surfaces in this absorbing self-portrait, set beside his best-known images. Winner of the Nadar prize in 1966 for a book on religious feasts in Sicily made with texts by Leonardo Sciascia, he tells here in the first person the whole of his adventure: his origins and his life, his thoughts and his techniques, fifty years of work. Over time his pictures have kept as their marks the strong oppositions of tone, with the image building itself around shadow — "I say that the sun excites me because it makes shadow. I build images starting from the shadow" — and the taste for telling the world, life and people. He works in order to know and to know himself, and to keep a trace.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
