Introduction by Stefano Bartezzaghi
A volume deliberately without pictures
Lampi series

Born of the bond that for years tied Ferdinando Scianna to Henri Cartier-Bresson — one of those intense, deep and lasting bonds, made of regard, respect and admiration, and of many books, mostly about the medium. The volume is devoted to the master of the Sicilian author, to his teaching, his images and his books. It is not an erudite essay nor a treatise in philology: what Scianna offers is a very personal conversation centred, as he puts it himself, on two great passions — the one for books, above all books of pictures, and the one, specifically, for the books of Cartier-Bresson, whom he considers the master of his masters, and not only he, since four generations have looked to him as the most important point of reference of the twentieth century. "His books interest me particularly because I believe there are paradoxes and many reasons of interest in his relation with books, and in the relation of those books with my life." It is a volume without images, because, as Bartezzaghi notes in his introduction, if Cartier-Bresson’s books can do without words, this book of Scianna’s, which speaks of those books, can do without pictures.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
