Tar Beach brings together photographs and recollections from the Little Italy neighbourhood of New York. The pictures were made, kept and gathered by different families from 1940 to the early 1970s, offering the view of several generations; Susan Meiselas, together with two other artists and residents of the neighbourhood, Angel Marinaccio and Virginia Dell'Orio, collected and published them so that the rooftops — the tar beach where people took the sun — would not be forgotten.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
