From 1972 to 1975 Susan Meiselas spent her summers photographing and interviewing the women who stripped at small-town carnivals in New England, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

Following the girl shows from town to town, she portrayed the dancers on stage and off it, recording their public performances as well as their private lives, and taping interviews with the dancers themselves.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
