Reproduces the three series Women and Work (1975), Who’s Holding the Baby? (1978) and Domestic Labour and Visual Representation (1980)

This is the first monograph devoted to the Hackney Flashers, a group of nine women activists who practised agitprop between 1974 and 1980 in the working-class district of Hackney in London. Their work denounced the pay gap between women and men, the double working day of mothers, and the half-infantile, half-glamorous pictures of women circulated by the media of the time. The volume brings together and reproduces, for the first time in full, all three of their series.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
