Illuminated signs accompanied Japan's post-war economic miracle and shaped an important part of the look of cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. Tsubasa Fujikura, based in Hokkaido, photographed these signs in order to keep a trace of them and to pay homage to what are anonymous works of art. His pictures and imaginary installations draw attention to the technical craft behind the tubes and to the beauty of their minimal art.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
