Aquifère grew out of a piece of research carried out in the valley of the Baronnies, in the Drôme Provençale, where the author went to meet water diviners — people credited with a know-how, a dowser's gift for sensing and finding water. For a month she was able to photograph their practice and to collect their stories along with those of other inhabitants of the valley with a strong tie to water and to what is at stake around it: farmers, stock breeders, hydrogeologists, drillers, local councillors. Through this research into dowsing, emblematic of a sensitive and rural know-how, the book questions the use, the exploitation and the sharing of water, a vital resource under severe strain, and the ecological and political issues that follow from it.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
