An illustrated novel extending the film trilogy The Tulse Luper Suitcases
On 7 May 1945 ninety-two gold ingots were found in a crashed car at Bolzano: gold confiscated from the victims of the Third Reich and its allies across Europe — prisoners of war, political enemies, the physically and mentally disabled, and above all Jews. Each ingot had its history. Gold tells the stories attached to those ninety-two, with a postscript on the nine that should have been in the car and were not. The relation between text and image is symptomatic of the complex relation Greenaway keeps with writing; the book is a fiction imagined out of his film trilogy The Tulse Luper Suitcases, in which the circumstances that shape the major episodes of Luper's life are set out.
