“The thesaurus of images of flight spanning three millennia of Western culture is seamless and almost limitless. Such a vast legacy can only be approached a little at a time. This exhibition of drawings is a small contribution to the History of Imagined Flight and to all the ridiculous frustrations that accompany it.

Each image has been chosen as a clue, a lesson, a trace, a directive, a reminder of the mysteries and the Thybris of flight, both sacred and profane. Each image is an example either of the ecstatic delights of a successful flight or of the consequences of a failed one.

Who knows whether, taken together, the positive and the negative might be capable of forming a model of how we too could take to the air. Metaphorically, certainly. And literally? Perhaps.”
