The book presents Gabriela Oliveira’s first experience with photography. At seventeen she moved from the countryside of her state to a Catholic boarding house in downtown São Paulo. It was 1978, and she had her brother’s Fujica 35fs and some Tri-X film. During a certificate course in drawing and communication she came across the exercise of photographing the place where she lived. Four decades later the images become a documentary on the daily life of a group of young women in the late 1970s who were making a new social space for themselves at the start of adulthood, far from their families. The way towards it ran through time, through the photographic archive, as an exercise in narrative editing. The book moves through memory by giving new shifts of meaning to a set of pictures born under the force of the time and place that surrounded the recording of the past. The spots and stains on the acetate, the random errors of a first development, bear witness to a captured moment brought out in a contemporary narrative place that opens up new stories.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
