Escavar o Invisível

André Hauck, Camila Otto

By bringing everyday photographs into an artistic context, the two artists propose new meanings for their subject, multiplying the readings it allows and prompting a reflection on the relation we weave with the spaces we inhabit, pass through, or do not even know. They mean to go beyond the formal questions of the art world and, through this approach, to narrow the distance between science, art and life. The pictures were built on ideas from topography and documentary photography mixed with the vernacular, constructing a private cartography, a kind of visual mapping of a route. They were made between February and April 2015 in the Jardim Canadá neighbourhood of Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, and set out to provoke thought about the many aspects of this town’s territories, stressing how urban space is at once brought together and broken apart.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
