A book for the centenary of Luiz Gonzaga, portraying the musician’s world through what tied him to the sertão, and above all to Pernambuco and the Cariri of Ceará, culturally among the most representative regions of popular culture in the northeast. The thread running through it is Luiz the man and the place where he was born, spent his childhood, discovered the world and built his work. The photographic essay is by Tiago Santana with a text by the journalist and writer Audálio Dantas, the pair who had already worked together on O Chão de Graciliano, which among other awards took the APCA prize and the Conrado Wessel prize in 2007. In 2014 the book itself won two prizes for graphic excellence, the Fernando Pini and the Premier Print Award — Benny.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
