A book about popular photography in Brazil that concentrates on fotopintura — hand-painted photographs — and on the work of Júlio Santos, known as Mestre Júlio, who for more than forty years has taken commissions at his Áureo Estúdio in Fortaleza from people all over the interior of Ceará, Piauí, Maranhão, Paraíba and Bahia. The project set out above all to make his work known and to keep it from being lost, and was curated by Rosely Nakagawa.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
