Western Europe, an oasis of peace and relative prosperity, is the object of the hopes of suffering populations living on its edges or on other continents. Commissioned for the Mission photographique transmanche, Fabiana Figueiredo sets photographs of Calabria, where her own family comes from, against portraits of migrants she met in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Made largely in and around Calais, the book is an album of the world of emigrants and refugees, of the economic hardship and the wars that push people to leave, and of the walls and surveillance with which wealthy countries answer them.
