"Following the idea of Ed Ruscha's Some Los Angeles Apartments and Twentysix Gasoline Stations, I have photographed eighteen high-rise buildings in Wels, but with the opposite approach. My aim was to catch the enthusiasm of the late 1950s for building towers even in small cities like Wels, as proof of wealth and modernity. Today such construction in city centres draws criticism and polarisation, while the residents of the Wels towers are no longer aware of living in one: for them it is a building like any other. I photographed the towers in a way you would not normally perceive them, so that residents looking at the pictures usually say something like: I know this building, but I have never seen it like that."

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
