The first book Anne Schwalbe published herself. The series Blindschleiche und Riesenblatt can be seen as an ode to slowness — an ode to nature, to light and to emptiness. Schwalbe works intuitively on what surrounds her, with nothing decided in advance. Gathered in a book or hung together on a wall, the pictures become the lines of a poem: prose in images. She gives form to stillness, another voice and a welcome change from the visual bombardment of the present, and a rhythm of colours and shapes emerges that invites contemplation and peace. The work was chosen for the first Self Publish, Be Happy weekend at The Photographers’ Gallery in London in 2010, and it belongs to the Book and Media Art Collection of the Kunstbibliothek Berlin and to the Special Collections of the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
