Chronology, exhibition list and bibliography

The retrospective monograph published for a major travelling exhibition organised by the Akron Art Museum, which opened in San Francisco and went on to Oklahoma, Washington, D.C., Newport Beach, California, and Akron, Ohio. The essays read the work from several sides: "Fiction as a higher truth" by the editor, "Seeing the unseen, saying the unsayable" by David L. Jacobs, a text by Van Deren Coke, his first photography teacher and mentor at the Lexington Camera Club, and "Remembering Gene Meatyard" by his friend Wendell Berry. The plates are joined by a chronology, a list of exhibitions and a bibliography.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
