Conversation between Thomas Ruff and Wenzel S. Spingler, with Valeria Liebermann
Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills, 19 April – 31 May 2014

Catalogue of the exhibition of Thomas Ruff's photograms and negatives at Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills (19 April to 31 May 2014). It contains a conversation between Ruff and Wenzel S. Spingler, with Valeria Liebermann, and sections on the photograms and on the negatives. The book was also published by Rizzoli in 2015. The photograms engage with the cameraless technique advanced by Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy in the early twentieth century: the images depict abstract shapes, lines and spirals in seemingly random formations with varying degrees of transparency and illumination, and the objects and the light derive from a virtual darkroom built by a custom-made software program.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
