An investigation into the uncomfortable experience of being a woman under the gaze of others, which operates as a form of control and everyday violence over female bodies. There is a gaze that pursues, unsettles and provokes fear: a constant presence that women learn to recognise very early on, in the street, on public transport, at home. It is not neutral; it organises behaviour, conditions routes and defines ways of inhabiting space from childhood. This book grows out of research carried out over six years by Érika Vitela with her university students, who were invited to share experiences of the gaze on the female body and its forms of control and violence. The publication brings together testimonies and images from the personal albums of more than 200 women.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
