Newington Green lies in the Mildmay ward of the London borough of Islington. Its history takes in Henry VIII, who had a hunting lodge nearby, and Mary Wollstonecraft, who set up a radical school there in the eighteenth century. In Victorian times the area developed as a residential community, but by the mid-twentieth century it had become neglected and run down; in the early 1970s it was designated a Housing Action Area, giving access to improvement grants and to a housing association that rehabilitated homes to rent to local people. The photographer lived in Mildmay Road for fifty years from 1970, and these are her neighbours.
