"I lived there for a few years from 1989-93. I went to a party there one time and knew there was something in that place for me. Hulme was like a republic in the 1980s and early 90s, a law unto itself, and a beacon for all this love and rage that couldn't find a voice elsewhere." Part of the Dogs of Heaven collective, which built forty-foot wicker men and Viking ships out of raided staircases from the Crescent flats and burnt them, she taught herself photography afterwards on a battered Praktika, learning at the speed she could afford film — one roll a month. These are those first pictures of the estate and of what people made there.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
