"These photographs were taken while I was studying photography at Harrogate College of Art, at my father's spinning mill in Keighley, West Yorkshire, using uprated black and white film and no flash. The firm was established just before the First World War by my grandfather, who was also mayor of Keighley in 1940-41, and employed some two hundred people in its heyday. Sadly, cheap imports of ready-made garments meant people were no longer buying wool to knit their own. The mills closed in 1989. Three generations of workers lost their livelihood, the companionship of mill life and, in some cases, their homes."

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
