In 1963 a seventeen-year-old homeless orphan from Leamington walked around the streets and old bomb sites of Coventry. She had just bought a 1933 Rolleicord with her first wages from an evening job as a waitress, was enrolled as a student at the Coventry College of Art, and spent every morning looking for subjects and every afternoon developing the films in the college darkroom. The negatives were stored in a box she carried with her when she left England in 1965; she never became the professional photographer she wanted to be but an artist, and rediscovered the box in her attic in Sweden at the age of eighty.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
