Made during the Artist Meets Archive residency of Internationale Photoszene Koeln at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum
What remains of a colonial past when it disappears from the face of a city, is distorted in the archive, or returns as a stage set? The work is a visual search for traces in the Chinese city of Qingdao: starting from a colonial photographic archive, the artist follows the visible and invisible marks of German colonial rule, from restored villas of the founding years to the myth-laden sewers underground. The city becomes an archive in itself, one in which history disappears and is rewritten, and yet goes on working.
