Design by Helena Melikov

The long-term project of a French-Swiss photographer. In analogue black and white portraits and anonymous fragments of text she puts women over fifty at the centre and questions the patriarchal ideals of beauty that push older bodies out of sight. Photographed in the private rooms of her subjects, the work produces intimate encounters in which age becomes tangible as lived experience, as strength and as visibility, and it stands as a plea for self-determination and for the recognition of many kinds of female body.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
