Essay: Impure Alchemy by Chris Kraus
Includes diary extracts, correspondence and contact sheets from the archive

The catalogue of the 2021 show at Marian Goodman Gallery. Close to forty photographs, most of them never published, are used to go back through Woodman's sources: literary, painterly, photographic. Moving by theme rather than by chronology, it brings out the sensitivity and the closeness of the work as much as her fascination with exploring the self. It covers both her training years in Rhode Island and her time in Italy, and it includes archive material that shows how she worked: extracts from her diary, her correspondence, her contact sheets. Chris Kraus's essay Impure Alchemy reads the life through that prism.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
