Carrara is a middling Tuscan town known for marble quarries worked since Roman times. Hascoët draws a portrait of it that looks nothing like a postcard: by setting photographic research against historical and political documentation, she lays out what industrial over-extraction has done to the mountain and conveys the town's anger. Carrara is put back into its militant context, because the town was for a long time an anarchist stronghold.
