On 10 April 1991 the Livorno Radio station was running an experimental project that recorded VHF channel 16, used for distress and emergency calls at sea, around the clock. That evening Italian television was broadcasting the Cup Winners' Cup semi-final; the tankers Agip Abruzzo and Agip Napoli and six militarised American vessels returning from the Gulf War lay at anchor in the roadstead of Livorno; a ferry had just left for Olbia. At about 22:20 a voice on channel 16 warns, in English: “The passenger ship, the passenger ship…”. A few minutes later, at 22:25, the Moby Prince collided with the Agip Abruzzo, and the tape recorded for ever the very faint may-day call that nobody seems to have received. Of the 141 people on board, passengers and crew, only one survived. Thirty years, a long and controversial judicial history and three parliamentary commissions of enquiry later, some points have finally been clarified but crucial questions are still unanswered. The story is an enormous jigsaw made of small pieces: some lost, some hidden, some buried for years under piles of statements and testimony. It is also a forgotten story, dismissed by the official account built in the immediate aftermath and removed from the memory of many — but not from that of the families of the victims, nor of those who believe its truth must be sought and its traces kept.
