“What happens to journalistic reportage pictures once the news has been published and superseded, and years of new news have put distance between the shot and the life of the image?” This seems to be the question Gabriele Stabile asks himself when, more than a decade later, he reopens his own files and begins a creative process with the pictures deposited there, turning them into the plates you leaf through in the book. The photographer's creative act, like human memory, leaves traces, marks, scratches and repetitions; it turns remembrance into an emotion, immediate even if barely vivid and thoroughly reworked. Swim Till I Sank is an invitation to dive into the depths of memory without necessarily drowning. As Giulia Zorzi writes, these pictures are reborn by passing through the filter of a kind of dream, a dimension far larger than precise remembrance or plain fact; the golden eyes here are also those of memory, which move beyond the moment to embrace time. They see the beauty and the elegance of a gesture that repeats itself in places, times and actions far apart from one another: the Aristotelian unities of photojournalism have definitively disappeared.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
