The volume accompanies a large exhibition and examines the artist's evolving practice, showing not only his pictures but also his video, digital slide projections, publications and recorded music. One essay gives an overarching view of that practice, from the physical materiality of the work to space and installation and to the use of abstraction; a second focuses on his relation with politics and society, with particular emphasis on the events of the last fifteen years and on the way he uses pictures and methods of distribution to examine global concerns such as migration and identity. He was the first photographer to win the Turner Prize, and his work is characterised by a constant investigation of the boundaries of the medium.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
