A diary-collage by the American photographer Edward Grazda, who worked for long periods in and around the country over four decades. His fascination for identity as it is represented in pictures led him to gather a large array of posters, stamps, newspapers, maps and other printed materials produced by various Mujahideen and freedom-fighter groups in Peshawar and beyond in the 1980s and 90s: a rare record of how local groups made use of media and promotion in their own voice.
Grazda has merged that gathering with his own pictures and anecdotes from the same period. Page by page we are thrown into a mix of journalistic reportage and personal reflection, anchored in the people he spent time with. The many groups, parties and players of those two complex decades, and their intentions, have never been fully recorded or digested.
