The book presents a record of unseen images from the shaming ceremonies held during the Cultural Revolution in Chongqing. The people shown were displayed and denounced in public. Records like these are very rare and have not yet found their way into public discussion, in China or internationally: only official photographers were allowed to document the period.
The images were given to the author by an anonymous person in Chongqing in 2015, and are published with a basic introduction to the period in English and Chinese. The Cultural Revolution is not the only violent period absent from private albums or still actively kept out of public discussion by those governing. This is not a book about facts, but an attempt to bring impersonal images of violence into a personal space of discussion.
