Michelle Sank's practice is concerned with encountering, collecting and re-telling. She is interested in making sociological landscapes, in the interplay of the human form and its setting.
The work in The Submerged was produced in mid Wales, in Aberystwyth and its surroundings, a coastal and hilly area at the end of the railway line. She became intrigued by the way both structures and people interact with the urban and natural make-up of that environment, and was drawn towards a sense of grittiness and resolution within its geological and architectural fabric — something so often mimicked in the light, the colour, the dramatic skies and the human performance within it.
