One Block follows the reconstruction of a single New Orleans block from 2006 to 2010, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, delivering a portrait of the storm's ongoing physical and psychological effects.
The compassionate treatment of the neighbourhood's straitened circumstances has drawn comparison with coverage of the Great Depression by Dorothea Lange and others funded by the Farm Security Administration. Seventy years later, between the devastation left by the hurricane and the housing crisis, the stability and permanence of the American home are once again in jeopardy. The work is an extension of the maker's optimistic belief that the good within each of us is what unites us, and of his hope that this commonality will afford us the grace both to endure and to emerge from our turmoil.
