Produced for the FotoFest Biennial 2020

Produced alongside the FotoFest Biennial 2020 exhibition, African Cosmologies: Photography, Time, and the Other brings together thirty-three artists of African origin from around the globe. For nearly forty years FotoFest has presented and worked with artists and thinkers from Japan, Latin America, Korea, China, Russia and the Arab region, and this is the first time in the biennial's history that the central exhibition focuses on artists of African origin.

In their distinct practices they turn an eye to the social, cultural and political conditions that inform ideas of representation as they pertain to the production and circulation of images in Africa and beyond. They question the ways in which subjectivity is constructed and deconstructed by the camera, and in the process reveal legacies of resistance by those who defy traditional ideas of sexual, racial, gender-based and other marginalised identities.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
