Hawkeye is a posthumously published companion to David Pace's 2020 volume Where the Time Goes; both are collaborations with his wife of many years, Diane Jonte-Pace. Where the earlier book examines their relationship since the early nineteen-seventies, this one looks further back, to frames David made with the Brownie Hawkeye he received for his eighth birthday in 1959, documenting from a child's perspective the family, the church, the work and the school of the region that would become Silicon Valley.

The camera was designed to be easy to use and required no particular expertise, but he took an active role in composing each frame: he arranged classmates under Easter banners, posed friends against walls, windows and doors, positioned nuns in front of the Virgin Mary, and composed a powerful image of his teacher, Bible in hand and in the traditional habit, sitting before a blackboard and below an American flag. All the early frames are slightly crooked, creating a signature style in a young maker's work.
