Jan Banning's case study of the United States criminal justice system and of mass incarceration delves into a three-decade-old murder case in Georgia. On 14 April 1992, twenty-two-year-old Christina Boyer was arrested.

Combining documentary and staged frames with texts, the book unravels the role of the media, presents analyses by medical professionals, and gives Banning's own visual interpretation of elements of the story. He invited the subject of the project to be an active participant: Boyer allowed him to disclose pages from her diaries, and gives viewers an insight into her inner world by writing her associations with his pictures from Georgia, showing how such an incarceration influences one's perception of the visual world. Stylistically the book refers to film noir, to nineteenth-century Romantic landscape and to seventeenth-century vanitas still life, and poses deep questions about objectivism against subjectivism.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
