Installation views and stories from the forty-five years since

In 1977 Janine Wiedel set out in her VW campervan to record industry in the West Midlands, once the heart of the Industrial Revolution — a region that was home to thousands of workshops, forges and foundries. The work was first shown at The Photographers' Gallery in 1979, where it drew wide acclaim and was recognised as one of the most important bodies of its generation.

This edition adds a new introduction and background material, installation shots and new stories gathered over the forty-five years since.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
