First published in 1967, this became one of the most collected photographic volumes of the second half of the century, standing beside the best-known work of Robert Frank and Ed van der Elsken.

It is an autobiography in pictures, laying out the many journeys of Strömholm across the world in the form of an existentialist journal. Setting the urban against the macabre, mixing portraits and street scenes with abstract fragments, it works by metaphor and visual pun in an unbroken stream of consciousness. In its sequence and its design it anticipates a great deal of what publishing in the field would later become.

From a review of 1967: “It is, to my knowledge, the first time a publishing house has given up requiring of a fine volume that it have a subject in the ordinary sense, or at least that it work on a social, documentary or simply decorative level. It is as original and as personal in its conception as a collection of contemporary lyric poetry, and almost as impenetrable in its formal language. It also shows a sovereign contempt for the reader, who is faced with a volume without a single caption, whose raw square format guides the eye nowhere and gives no thread to follow.”

After an earlier revival of Strömholm's Les Amies de Place Blanche, this reissue brings back a second essential title.
