Text by Maria Will

The forest fires that ravaged southern Europe between 2001 and 2005 left vast landscapes of cataclysm. It is in the silence that follows the catastrophe that Stefania Beretta works. She surveys those devastated spaces, recording in monochrome and in colour, in wide views, the desolation of ashes but also the detail of soils roasted by intense heat.

Back in the studio she works on some of the negatives, manipulating them with skilful chemical interventions until she burns them in turn: an iconoclastic gesture, as if it were necessary to abolish the distance between her indignation and the sad spectacle of these disasters.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
