For the nomad, travel is not a state of transition: it is a lasting way of being, an identity, the opposite of an adventure. Such is the daily life of an airline pilot, unfailingly ready to answer less the call of the open sea than the ever-changing demands of his flight plans. There are few points of reference in a life at once scheduled and unstable: every week a new crew, a new destination among the fifty served by his company's Airbus A330 and A340; people and cities barely known, sometimes barely loved, already left behind.

The downtime between flights is the real time of living. During his distant stopovers, between the two brackets of yet another arrival and a new departure, François Suchel works. His gaze, rather than lingering on people or things, touches them and caresses them, as if the streets, the faces and the bodies were glimpsed at the rhythm of a stopover.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
