Set up at the Seaman's Club, in the heart of the cruise terminal of the port of Marseille, Patrice Terraz worked in the constant setting of the travelling portraitist: camera on a stand, ephemeral studio with a white ground, natural light. Over months of sittings, contacts and permissions he built a striking gallery of figures from around the world — a hundred faces on a stopover, caught close up, come there for a short break in a welcome centre reserved for sailors. Fifty-seven nationalities are represented.
