In 2005 Jean-Yves Gargadennec learned that Carabanchel, the infamous Francoist prison in Madrid, was going to be razed to make room for a shopping centre. He set out to record its memory, and from then on began a long stretch of work on resistance to Francoism, building a gallery of portraits of surviving resistance fighters who had been held there. He then decided to record the places of repression throughout the Iberian peninsula, revealing many forgotten sites of massacres and mass graves.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
