For fifteen years Arno Gisinger has developed a multidisciplinary practice that links the recorded image to historiography. His work tests how the past can be rendered visually through its different forms and figures: witnesses, places and documents. Topoï brings his main projects together in a moving constellation and offers a contemporary rereading of the places and non-places of memory.

Inspired by German thought of the interwar years and by the methods of the new history, the projects run from the Nuremberg trial to the memory of Voltaire, from Walter Benjamin's places of exile to the memorial images of Vietnam veterans, from school textbooks to the sites of resistance in the Limousin, from Oradour to Yugoslavia, from American objects bearing the image of 11 September 2001 to the inventory of property confiscated from Jews, from the Korean border to the outskirts of Bastia. They lay bare the political staging behind collective memory, summon what is no longer visible, and exercise remembrance.
