This is a photo story about a former stunt riding cowboy from some of the most iconic cigarette commercials of the 1980s. After a long career on the road, Ed Forbis now lives and works at the Grand Canyon, packing mules and caring for the horses used by rangers and tour guides. Far removed from the limelight, he lives a simpler life, staying connected with nature and the animals. The story was photographed at his current home on the south rim of the canyon, in Arizona.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
