“I guess the expression chorosuna is no longer used these days. It was still alive among Japanese practitioners back when I went freelance about half a century ago: an expression that hints at the way people at the time were roaming the streets with their cameras in hand, taking snapshots in a casual fashion.

Today it seems that those who work like that in the street have become extremely rare. This probably has to do with a notion of self-control through conventions and regulations about the right to one's own likeness or the encroachment of privacy. But that is not all: it appears to me that the fact that the medium itself has changed with the times plays a rather important role as well.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
