Hajime Sawatari's practice has long navigated the intersection of reality and fiction, capturing a delicate boundary through a female sitter. Here he follows a woman alone at home in the afternoon: her gestures and expressions, caught in a natural and unadorned state, are both fictional and yet offer a glimpse of the real. While the scenes are drawn from his imagination, they resonate with authentic moments that aim to hold the ephemeral essence of a reality existing beyond the invented one. Working the peculiar quality of the medium, he invites the viewer into the interplay between the invented and the observed.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
