FantomBooks, the series arising from Fantom magazine, debuted with this title by Takashi Homma, curated by Francesco Zanot and designed by Fabrizio Radaelli. Extremely accurate in concept and printing, it was published in an edition of 350 copies and sold in a few selected bookshops.

The project is the result of the cooperation between Andrea Botto and Francesco Zanot, respectively director and curator of the annual Rapallo festival, who entrusted the Japanese artist to work around the theme of memory and personal archives in Rapallo and in the Italian region of Liguria. During his stay in the area, fascinated by the pictures stored in the archives of Genoa and Rapallo, Homma explored the need to preserve personal and intimate memories, especially after a loss. He made eleven portraits of widowed women — witnesses for their dead partners' memories — and captured a glimpse of the places where they live. He also re-photographed the snapshots of their family albums, published exclusively in the book, which is therefore an integral part of the project and of the exhibition held at the Castello di Rapallo.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
