In Michael Wolf's photographs, laundry blown away by the wind and landed in all imaginable poses on cables, roofs and billboards is transformed into wondrous sculptures of everyday life. Michael Wolf is creating another small monument to his adopted home of Hong Kong.

His approach is that of a chronicler and collector. Since 2003, he has been creating a visual encyclopedia of Hong Kong's back alleys, photographing the artistic installations of mops, gloves, chairs and lost items of laundry that were created due to lack of space and economic necessity. The photographer approaches these temporary arrangements with insightful interest and subtle humor.

The book was conceived together with Michael Wolf and completed with him in Hong Kong. It is not only the final volume of the “Informal Solutions” series, but also his last publication. Michael Wolf died on April 24, 2019 in Hong Kong.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
