Ten Magnum photographers explore the Republic of Georgia in the spring of 2009, twenty years after the country gained independence from the Soviet Union. Located between the Middle East, Russia and Europe, and still recovering from two wars, Georgia has experienced its worst moment. From being the Soviet Union’s dream region, it became a failed state during the 1990s, when no one paid taxes and there was only electricity for two hours a day. Now, despite Russia’s animosity, Georgia emerges from its dark years with a fighting spirit.

The book is exquisitely designed in the manner of a travelogue. Each photographer’s trip to Georgia focuses on a different aspect of the country, presented as a diary of photographs and words. It includes an archival section showing the best Magnum photographs taken in Georgia since 1948.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
